Growing up in the 70’s, my life was shaped quite a bit by PBS. We didn’t have a gazillion channels to choose from and the only time we got to watch cartoons was on Saturday mornings. We also didn’t have the science channel, discovery or even the history channel. So if I was interested in anything science related I only had two options: 321 Contact and The Electric Company.
I credit those two shows, along with Monty Python’s Flying Circus for making me who I am today. (In my teen years, I learned to enjoy Nova while I was falling asleep on the couch on Sunday nights.) You can imagine how excited I was to hear that PBS is bringing back The Electric Company! Although I’m quite sure it will be nothing like it was in the good old days, I’m willing to give it a shot.
BTW, I also credit this show, as well as Sesame Street for showing me black, whites, hispanics, etc. who were all friends. I live in the deep south. This was a new concept for me. ANYWAY, I’m glad it’s coming back and I hope it’s not nausiating. Maybe I should stick to watching the old ones on youtube so that I’m not disappointed.
Remember this? I love it!

Can we please talk about this Fox News “Sexpert”?
Really, I think it’s great that she uses the Obamas as a good example of a great relationship that probably has a good sex life. She cites the fact that they are often touchy in public and look each other in the eyes when they kiss.
However, this is where her report went wrong. Way, way wrong.
In the immortal words of Inigo Montoya, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. “
Someone please call this woman up and give her a clue. Or, just let me see her face when she googles what in the hell it is that’s causing such a big fuss. Either way, I think I’m going to go about calling myself a sexpert now.

Think Geek just launched a ton of new stuff, including this awesome OMG Pwnies shirt. We got the new catalog in with all the stuff we ordered each other for Christmas this year and found out that they have even launched a line of Geek Baby Products!
They even have teeny tiny little star wars costumes for babies! How can you resist that? And, of course, the classic “Come to the Dark Side, We Have Cookies” in new kids sizes.
Geektastic! I’m in heaven.

In continuance with my robot theme this month, here is an awesome Robot Lamp made by Urban Outfitters. I would love to have one of these for my future home office!
They’re only $30 bucks and they’re beautiful!
As far as my last post about the robots of the world, one of you asked if perhaps we should be judging scientific knowlege by number of light microscopes per country as opposed to the number of robots.
I actually tried to find some statistical data for this, but none was to be found. Sorry, readers, we’ll just have to stick to the robot data on this one. Either way, we’re farther behind than we should be.
Robots or not.

Looking at this map, you can tell how far, technology wise, we are behind other countries…especially Japan!
It’s sad that we are becoming a country who favors football more than science and education. It’s Idiocracy in action. (If you haven’t seen the film, I recommend you watch it immediately…sad, but true.)
Also, funny that we are behind Italy in numbers of robots. How strange. Who knew Italians were so crazy about robots?
Ok, now I want some pizza.
Wierd.

ThinkGeek has these awesome plush microbes for sale. I got my son the Common Cold one for Christmas. The common cold was never so cute!
I had a hard time choosing one. They have sperm, ovum, chicken pox, toxic mold, fat cells, the plague and more! LOL I didn’t figure the sperm one would be very appropriate for my son, so I went with the common cold one.
I’d love to see them do a series of genomes like this. Or maybe an entire DNA strand done in plush! That would be awesome!!
I think every classroom should have an entire set. Which one would you choose?

Ah, remember the days of the five and a quarter floppy? My first on campus college job was spending hours in a computer lab formatting those things. My, how far we’ve come.
As a tribute to the bohemeths of computer data storage, The Geekery is selling these beautiful coasters on Etsy. They are made of EcoSpun felt (recycled) and have a used cd stitched into the inside to make the coasters more durable.
You can get a set of four for $28 and the case is included. These would be oh so cute sitting on my desk with my spiked coffee atop the pink one.
If you order the customizable set, you even get to choose your colors! I loved handcrafted items. This one is a win/win.
Yay Geekery!
