Solar Powered Theremin Kit

Published by thegreenninja at 3:55 pm under Geek Gifts, Science Edit This

Everyone in my house is a musician.  Everyone in my house is a geek.  So of course, this Christmas, Santa brought us a multitude of geek toys to enjoy.

I got this solar powered theremin kit for my finance.  We are both obsessed with this instrument and have always wanted to fool around with one.  The fact that he gets to build his own and that it’s solar is a bonus! Plus, it’s made in an altoids tin!

I can’t wait for him to put it together! You can either manipulate the sound waves using your hands or by opening and closing the top of the box.  If you have no idea what a theremin is, well, you probably aren’t a true geek.  But if you would like to find out, you can check out the video below.

I kind of geek out over theremins. I don’t even know why. I got to try one in a museum a few years ago, and ever since I’ve had a huge affection for artists who actually use them in their music–Patrick Wolf, for instance, but I forget who else.
