How to Make Moonlight in a Jar

Published by thegreenninja at 8:04 pm under Geek Gifts, Science, Uncategorized Edit This

One of the neatest Christmas gifts that you can make this year is Sunlight or Moonlight in a jar.

It’s super easy to make and a wonderful little homemade present that anyone would like.

To make one,  purchase a solar garden light ( you should be able to find one of these at any department store for around $10) and rip off the outside casing.  A simple utility knife should do the job.  You want to leave the innards in tact as shown below.

Place the solar light parts inside of a  glass jar that has a hinging lid.

Cut strips of tracing paper or tissue paper and glue them to the inside of the jar.  Use light blue if you want a Moonlight Jar or orange if you want a Sunlight Jar.

Sit the jar on the front porch, on the patio or in the bedroom window.  These make great nightlights for kids if you sit them in the window and let them soak up the sun all day.  This is a really good project for a kid who is bored out of his mind on Christmas break.

It’s a great way to line the driveway for a party, too.

It looks great. I’m going to try this as soon as I’m done with exams.

It sounds like fun. Does the solar panel sit on the bottom?

It does..you just drop the whole thing inside the jar. If you use tissue paper, your panel will still get enough sunlight..or, if you’re having trouble, you could just open the jar during the day.
